The Winery
Fourrier
Based out of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte d'Or region of Burgundy is the highly sought after Domaine Fourrier. The estate is known for their silky Pinot Noir wines made from Premier Cru vines that are more than 30 years old. Fernand Pernot founded the estate in the 1930s and enlisted in the assistance of his nephew, Jean-Claude Fourrier, who took full reign of the winery in 1969. In 1994, Jean-Marie Fourrier, son of Jean-Claude, re-branded the winery by combining his modern winemaking-techniques with his father’s traditional methods. Since Jean-Marie’s changes to the already well-established estate, the domaine has produced wines that are an iconic representation of Burgundy full of intensity and complexity, and critics rave that a range of Fourrier’s vintages will bear witness to the developing legacy of one of the Côte de Nuits’ most important domains.
Tasting Notes
- WA93–95
- The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe Aux Moines comes from 0.87-hectares of vine planted in 1928. It veers more towards the carefree, zesty fruit profile with orange blossom and fresh apricot infusing the pure red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit. This is feminine and nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a very pure, structured entry, a fine line of acidity and wonderful tension towards the finish. This is a seductive but nonchalant Gevrey-Chambertin with superb length that should age with style. Range:93-95
- BH91–94
- This is both aromatically cooler and more elegant with ultra-pure essence of red pinot fruit that is liberally laced with mineral and wet stone hints. The mineral influence continues onto the lilting yet focused and intense medium-bodied flavors that vibrant with energy before concluding in an almost pungently saline-inflected, long and linear finish that exhibits just a touch of youthful austerity. This is a seriously good wine that is more elegant than usual. Range: 91-94
